It is essential that your puppy is introduced to the grooming experience at around 12 weeks old. This is a crucial part in the development, growth and socialisation of your puppy. The socialisation and acceptance window in puppy development closes at the 16-20 weeks stage therefore introducing your puppy to grooming before this window closes will ensure a happy puppy, a happy groomer and a happy owner.
Pawsome Dogs offers a three step approach that gradually builds the puppy’s self-confidence which ensures grooming will be accepted as a part of life and will be an enjoyable experience for the pup for the rest of their lives.
In order to qualify for the puppy package, the three step approach must be booked to start when the puppy reaches 12 weeks old.
Step 1 :
No actual grooming will take place on your first visit to the salon and this session is free of charge. The session will last about 15 mins and the aim is to complete necessary paper work and introduce the puppy to the salon. There may be other puppies in the salon doing the same thing - another great way to positively socialise! They have time to look, smell and move around alongside some play, treats and cuddles. We recommend this step is repeated a couple of times and builds up to a nail trim.
Step 2 :
The second visit will be within one week after step one and will cost from £25 depending on breed. The session will be no longer than 45 minutes. This will be when the puppy will receive a wash and dry. We will not force the puppy to do anything the pup does not want to. At this point there will be an introduction to equipment we plan to use in future grooms. Sometimes it may be necessary to repeat step two before moving on to step three to ensure the puppy is completely relaxed and willing to be groomed.
Ideally the puppy should have experienced steps one and two prior to the age of 16 weeks.
Step 3 :
The third visit will ideally be two weeks after step two between 16-20 weeks and the price will be 75% of the full charge for the specific breed. The session will last between 1 - 1½ hours and the puppy will receive a full groom. Again, we won’t force the puppy to do anything the pup doesn’t want to do.
This three step approach ensures we put the puppies welfare first and they learn and understand that grooming is not dangerous or scary in any way. It may mean that the puppy isn’t completely dry, or we haven’t managed to trim all the nails, or perhaps the finishing touches or cut are not as neat and tidy as we would like, but we will explain this to you and the reasons why at the end of each session. We are also happy to offer advice on what you can be doing at home to continue the training and de-sensitisation to allow for an enjoyable grooming experience.
